February is Black History Month
Genia Stevens’00, founder and executive director of Rock County Jumpstart, will help students bring their ideas to life and learn the tools needed to start and sustain a small business during a Career Fair on February 15.
Hello Beloiters! As we turn the calendar from January to February this week, we look towards celebrating Black History Month.
Black Students United (BSU) and Student Success, Equity & Community (SSEC) are hosting a number of events, beginning with what is sure to be a powerful panel from 5-6 p.m. Thursday at Grace’s Place in Pearsons. Beloit College Archivist Emeritus Fred Burwell and SSEC will present the history of Black students and aspects of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements at Beloit College during the 1960s.
All are welcome to attend additional events throughout the month, which include:

- Feb. 15 – Career Fair: Lunch and Learn with Genia Stevens’00
- Feb. 17 – Black Gala
- Feb. 21 – Soul Food Luncheon
- Feb. 27 – 5 v 5 Basketball
Senior Graduation Fair
The President’s Office will host a Senior Grad Fair at the Powerhouse on Wednesday from noon - 2:00 p.m. The open house will provide important information for seniors preparing for graduation and beyond. Come mingle with classmates, enjoy some snacks, and get ready for this exciting time ahead.
E-sports on campus
Beloit’s Gaming and Esports Club hosted the “Rock River Rushdown,” a Super Smash Bros tournament that drew talent from southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Derrick Wright II, under the gamer tag “D-Money,” emerged victorious.
Sports recap
The Buccaneers’ men’s basketball team picked up their second win of 2024, edging out the Lawrence University Vikings, 71-63. With a conference record of 6-5, the win put the Bucs back on track to potentially secure a Midwest Conference Tournament bid.
The women’s basketball team lost a one-point heartbreaker to the Vikings, 51-52. Beloit’s record of 5-6 puts them on the outside looking in, but only one game back of a tournament bid.
Men’s and women’s track competed in the Spartan Shootout, where both teams placed sixth. The meet was highlighted by Josh Yearby’27 breaking Beloit’s men’s indoor 60 M record, with a time of seven seconds. The previous record was 7.1 seconds, set last year by Ajani Joseph’23.

A data centered, career forward class
An innovative capstone course ensures that sociology students put their learning into practice and launch into satisfying careers. Professor of Sociology Kate Linnenberg designed the capstone course, which is taught each fall semester, to help students feel prepared for their lives after Beloit College through a partnership with a local organization.

Career Ready Programming Fund
All faculty and staff are eligible to apply for funds to be used to create programming for students that advances their career-readiness.
Join student production of “The Trail to Oregon”
Beloit Independent Theatre Experience (BITE) is also holding auditions for The Trail to Oregon on Monday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, Jan. 30. The student-led show is also seeking people with interest or experience in music, dance, costumes, and theatre production. Those looking to participate or wanting to learn more should complete the interest form.
