Three faculty granted tenure

Hello Beloiters! 

Let’s congratulate the three faculty members who were granted tenure and promoted to associate professor at the February Board of Trustees meeting, beginning this fall: Professor Joe Bookman (Media Studies), Professor Michael Dango (English), and Professor Sonya Maria Johnson (Critical Identity Studies).

In addition, the board approved emeriti status for two faculty members, Alexis Grosofsky, professor of psychology, and Oswaldo Voysest, associate professor of Spanish, as well as for former President Scott Bierman, who retired in June, and for Bruce Heine, director of security, who will retire in March.


Professor Darrah Chavey granted emeritus status posthumously

The late Professor Darrah Chavey (Mathematics and Computer Science), who passed away in January and at the time was the college’s longest-serving faculty member, was granted emeritus status posthumously. A memorial service will be held for Professor Chavey at 1 p.m. March 9 at the Castle, 501 Prospect St. in Beloit.


February Beloiters Spotlight winner

Congratulations to Mario Scarpaci from Security for being selected for this month’s Beloiters Spotlight. Mario will receive cool Beloit swag as well as a new perk: he will receive a parking spot for the month of March! 


Sports recap

It was a big weekend for the Beloit College athletics teams.

  • Men’s basketball faced off against Grinnell College in the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament, where they had earned a berth for the first time in 22 years. The Bucs came back from a 17-point deficit, but fell just short, losing 118-115.
  • Beloit’s track and field teams competed in the Midwest Conference Indoor Championships. Beloit broke seven school records over the weekend including the 4 x 400 and 4 x 200 relays in both men’s and women’s, the men’s 200 M, and the women’s indoor pole vault.
  • The track and field teams also made the podium seven times. The women’s team won individual titles in the 200 M and 400 M, placed second in the high jump, second in the 4 x 200 M relay, and took first in the 4 x 400 M relay. The men’s team placed second and third in the high jump and third in the 4 x 400 M relay. Senior sprinter Canis Damste’24 was named Women’s Indoor Track and Field Outstanding Track Performer after winning both the 200 and 400 M.
  • Women’s lacrosse started their season off hot, winning their opening matchup at home against William Penn University (Iowa), 8-5.
